According to Gallup, 59% of Americans are unhappy with how we deal with the poor. I don’t know how people interpreted that question, but I would guess that most of the people surveyed considered how government programs helped the poor and whether they were adequate. Government programs have their place and serve their purpose, but they don’t relieve us of individual responsibility.

How often do we expect a homeless person to go to a shelter for help or an unemployed person to apply for benefits to feed their family? We are fortunate to live in a country that makes an effort to care for its needy citizens, but these programs are often strained because we think they are the answer to the problem.

Christians should never have to wait for or depend on government relief. Recall Galatians 6:10, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” As we have opportunity, we Christians need to be doing good to all, especially fellow Christians. We at 1213 are seeking to follow this pattern. Help us help each other, build relationships, and give glory to God.
